American hyperrealist painter Steven Kozar began his professional career as an artist, just after dropping out of art school in 1986.
Painting primarily in watercolour, with the occasional use of oil and acrylic, Kozar’s works are based on his travels through his native Wisconsin, the midwestern state in the USA. Like many artists in his field, Kozar uses photographs from his travels as references back in his studio. The resulting paintings are subtle and cohesive; Kozar layers colours on top of one another, allowing him to capture the light beautifully and create a unique atmosphere, so typical in his works.
It is important to note that, although photographs are used as reference in the early stages of his process, Kozar remembers the captured landscapes with a romantic minds eye.
“My hope is to make paintings so beautiful that words become a distraction.”
- Steven Kozar
