Overview

Born: 1951, Canada

Michael French currently lives in San Miguel De Allende and spends most days in his studio except when on vacation which he usually spends on his Hinckley sailboat, sailing on the Pacific Coast of Mexico.

During his youth, French lived and travelled extensively with his family across Europe which influenced his painting subjects in the years to come. In 1972, he met Andrew Wyeth in South Cushing, Maine. Wyeth offered valuable guidance on both painting techniques and navigating the art world which deeply impacted Michael’s earlier works.

Michael French’s subjects include seascapes, urban and natural landscapes and still lifes. He paints them both from memory and photographs he has taken, allowing him to freeze in time fleeting moments such as shifting light or the gradual decay of a flower. It also enables him to eliminate unnecessary visual distractions creating compositions that convey harmony, balance and a sense of calm.

Over the past 57 years, the artist has exhibited in Toronto, Montreal, New York, Paris, San Miguel de Allende, Carmel and London. His work now figures prominently in major public and very important private collections around the world.
