Overview

Born: 1974, Italy

Born in Italy in 1974, Adolfo Bigioni attended the University of Rome where he studied illustration and anatomical surgical drawing. For many years his work was focused on human anatomy drawings, but in 2006 he decided to devote himself exclusively to the painting of still lifes.

Situated squarely within the Italian still-life tradition, Bigioni’s work nevertheless feels very contemporary due to his hyperrealistic approach. He transforms and elevates everyday objects with carefully constructed compositions, immense detail and beautiful reflections. Bigioni shares common ground with other Hyperrealist artists through the monumentality of his subjects and their placement against a grey surface and black background.

The artist allows himself to be inspired by what surrounds him: a basket of fruit on a table, a sweet shop, a glass of wine: everything can become a beautiful painting in Adolfo Bigioni’s hands. Objects that we use or see every day that don’t arouse our attention are placed in the centre of the canvas and become subjects that we simply can’t look away from.
