Shimmering Light: Tom Betts Solo Show
In his latest series, Tom Betts revisits the still lifes of his celebrated Tea and Seamotifs with a new sense of wonder. These hand-painted oils on panel capture the precise shimmering intersections of sunlight and water, submerging porcelain vessels into active and rippling environments. By shifting perspectives to embrace the "splash", Betts introduces a new sense of movement to his meticulous work, inviting the viewer to find something extraordinary in the interplay of light and water.
In these paintings, the stillness of his traditional subjects meets the kinetic energy of sparkling sun-drenched water. Through subtly shifted perspectives and a mastery of the "shimmer”, Betts uses the vessel and the sea as metaphors for the ephemeral. These paintings document a timely nod to his origins while elevating the dialogue between traditional figuration and the atmospheric qualities of the natural world.
His latest solo show at Plus One Gallery, ‘Shimmering Light’, features new paintings from his latest series as well as some paintings from his cups and lights series.
