Francois Chartier worked in the advertising world as an art director and illustrator for thirty years, but in 2000 he decided to become a full-time painter.
His first encounter with Hyperrealism was in the mid 70’s in New York. On a very early morning, Chartier was coming back from a disco night and waked past a gallery window that had a painting of a gumball machine. This was the biggest painting he had ever seen in-person and after admiring it for a long time, he told himself that one day he was going to do a paint in the same way. He later discovered that this gumball machine painting was by Charles Bell.

Chartier’s choice of subjects is usually dictated by the rhythm, shape, colour, light and shadow he obtains by staging objects, flowers or figurines together. In his large compositions, Chartier goes on a journey to explore the nature of light with reflective and transparent surfaces, aiming to convey his sense of wonder and intrigue over them.

Another of his striking subjects is that of childhood memorabilia crowded together and painted larger-than-life in his unique style. Looking at his paintings can be a nostalgic as familiar characters from Batman to Corky are half-hidden among the colourful chaos. His approach is joyful and humorous, and he tries to apply his unique vision to the creation of images that move him and inspire the viewer.
