Overview

1935 - 2018

Mel Ramos was an American figurative painter renowned for his striking depictions of female nudes, often set within the realms of commercialism and sleek graphic design. Born in Sacramento, California, to a first-generation Portuguese-Azorean immigrant family, Ramos became synonymous with iconic imagery of superheroes and voluptuous women emerging from banana peels or candy wrappers, lounging in martini glasses, or posing alongside animals.

As artists of his era increasingly questioned the rise of consumer culture, they also embraced the bold colors and graphic forms of commercial art, integrating these elements into their paintings. Over the course of his six-decade career, Ramos participated in more than 120 group and solo exhibitions worldwide. He was represented by galleries in California, New York, Spain, Austria, and Germany, solidifying his status as one of the foremost international artists of the 20th and early 21st centuries.
